Understanding the Personal Statement : US Applicants

As an applicant applying to colleges and universities in the United States, you may be required to write an essay as part of your application process.

For undergraduate applicants, if an essay is required, institutions often provide a list of topics from which the applicant must choose and write. Some institutions may instead allow applicants to write on a topic of their choice or use the opportunity to explain any gaps in their educational history, highlight significant achievements, or share credentials that could strengthen their application.

From my experience working with applicants over the years, I always recommend completing this section of the application, even when it is listed as optional. A well-written essay can provide valuable insight into who you are beyond your academic records.

For graduate applicants, writing an essay—commonly referred to as a Personal Statement—is typically not optional. At most institutions, it is a required component of the application process.

While writing a personal statement may come naturally to some applicants, it can be equally challenging for others.

This article attempts to answer the following questions:

1. What is a Personal Statement?
2. What are some of the topics an applicant can highlight in a Personal Statement?
3. How can an applicant effectively introduce themselves and present aspects of their background, experiences, and future aspirations so the admissions committee gains a clear understanding of who they are, where they have come from, and where they hope to go?

More importantly, how can they help the committee envision why they would be a strong fit for the program and how it aligns with their educational and career goals?

What Is a Personal Statement?

In my opinion, a Personal Statement is simply a prospective applicant's statement of purpose that outlines their educational and professional goals.

A Personal Statement gives applicants the opportunity to advocate for themselves. It should highlight the educational journey they have undertaken, their current academic and professional experiences, their research interests (where applicable), and why they believe admission into the program will help advance their educational and career aspirations.

Additionally, the statement should communicate the strengths, qualities, experiences, and credentials the applicant will bring to the program or cohort for the academic term under consideration.

By the time the admissions committee finishes reading an applicant's Personal Statement, they should have gained meaningful insight into the applicant—not only academically and professionally, but also personally. The committee should understand the applicant's motivations, aspirations, and the value they can contribute to the program

Additional Recommendations

When writing your Personal Statement, I recommend the following:

• Keep the document to a maximum of two pages unless the institution specifies otherwise.
• Include a clear and professional heading or title.
• Ensure the document is well formatted and thoroughly proofread to eliminate grammatical and spelling errors.
• Be concise and intentional with your writing. Admissions committees review a large number of applications during each admission cycle, so presenting your story clearly and effectively without unnecessary details is essential.

In a nutshell a well-crafted Personal Statement should be informative, engaging, and purposeful. Every paragraph should contribute to helping the admissions committee better understand your journey, your goals, and your potential to succeed in the program.
