Don't let Geography limits the perceived value of your degree

In the course of my work, I have encountered a recurring challenge faced by many applicants from certain geographical locations—one that often influences how they perceive the value of pursuing specific degrees.

I would like to share a real-life example.

I connected with an applicant who was passionate about pursuing a master's degree in English in the United States. However, he was hesitant and constantly second-guessing whether the time, effort, and financial investment would be worthwhile. Interestingly, his hesitation was not because he doubted his ability to successfully complete the program. Rather, it stemmed from the limitations imposed by the job market in his home country.

As I sought to understand the reason behind his uncertainty, I discovered that he believed his career options after graduation and returning home would be limited to becoming an English teacher or pursuing a degree in law. Unfortunately, neither of these career paths aligned with his personal interests or long-term aspirations.

Curious to better understand his concerns, I conducted additional research on the employment landscape in his country. What I found was quite concerning. Many degree programs were either marginalized or offered very limited employment opportunities because there were few, if any, industries that actively hired graduates in those fields. In some cases, there were literally no industries or established career pathways where graduates could apply their knowledge and skills. Compared to the diverse and dynamic job market in a developed country like the United States, the opportunities available in her geographical location were significantly narrower.

My findings deeply disturbed me.

Rather than allowing those limitations to discourage him, I wanted to encourage him to continue pursuing the educational dream he was genuinely passionate about. While he was still contemplating whether it was worth taking the chance, I sent him information on more than ten different career opportunities available in my geographical location where graduates with a master's degree in English could thrive, along with estimated salary ranges.

His response surprised me.

He admitted that he had been viewing his future solely through the lens of his current geographical location. He had never considered that the same degree could open doors to many other careers and opportunities elsewhere. That limited perspective had nearly prevented him from pursuing a field he was genuinely excited and passionate about.

As I reflected on this experience, I realized that his situation is not unique. Many applicants from similar geographical locations struggle with the same mindset. They become discouraged from pursuing certain degrees because they judge the value of those degrees based only on the opportunities available in the country where they currently live.

To every prospective applicant reading this, I want to offer this encouragement:

Do not allow your current geographical location to define the value of your educational dream.

The opportunities available where you live today do not necessarily represent the opportunities that will exist for you tomorrow. You may currently reside in a place where your intended degree is undervalued or where career opportunities seem limited. Naturally, this can make you question whether pursuing that degree is worthwhile.

But no one knows what the future holds.

No one knows where your education may take you, the people you may meet, the networks you may build, or the doors that may open during or after your studies. The world is far bigger than your current surroundings. There are 195 countries across seven continents, each with unique industries, economies, and career opportunities. Your educational journey could become the very pathway that leads you to opportunities you have never imagined.

Do not let a mindset shaped solely by your current geographical location rob you of your future possibilities. Instead, choose to see beyond today's limitations and embrace tomorrow's opportunities.
